Your Online Image #2

Your Online Image #2

You are the young manager of a local ice cream parlor that is beloved by local families. You are looking to hire some teens for the summer, when the shop is open late every evening. You require an application and at least one reference. It occurs to you that you could look on Facebook to find out a bit more about the applicants.

What might you find that would make you not hire someone?

Is there anything wrong with using Facebook in this way?

  1. I don't think there's anything wrong with using Facebook this way because you want to know if you are hiring responsible and trustworthy people, but depending on what they post you may not want to hire them. If you see a lot of pictures or videos of them doing bad things or partying a lot you may not want to hire them, and if they don't have a good online reputation they might not be the kind of person you want working for you.

    3. Correct, you could look through there past jobs and see if they are a qualified employee, if not then you dodged a bullet.

    4. I Disagree Because you should be hired for who you are and your acxhements. Most people dont post everything on facebook just dumb things that happen and funny videos.

  3. If I was going trough there profile and trying to find something that would make me not hire them, I would be looking for something that leads me to think that they have anger issues, or something that leads me to believe that they have emotional issues that'll effect how they work or there performance.

  4. If I saw someone partying consistently or making inappropriate comments that would make me think twice about hiring them. Partying would be a concern because that tells me that the person may not be responsible enough to be a work during their assigned times. If someone was making inappropriate comments online, chances are, they would make those comments in public as an employee. I do not think there is anything wrong with using Facebook as an inside resource.

    1. There isn't a problem with using Facebook or other social media as a resource to find background information on your possible future employees, and I agree that those things would make you think twice about hiring someone.

    2. You're completely right. When someone comes in to fill out an application they are obviously going to make themselves seem responsible and perfect for the job. When you go on Facebook you get to know a lot more about who they actually are.

    3. I agree, I believe that you could easily see the real people through their facebook page, and if they seem to be inappropriate people, they shouldn't get the job.

    4. Agreed, people overlook Facebook and think that their personal lives are a secret, when in reality everyone can see it. They could be wasting their valuable free time partying and being irresponsible.

    5. I agree that people would probably be a little hesitant to hire someone that is constantly partying.

  5. Facebook could provide the employer with information like, how the person treats other people on social media. Also, if they posted about bad things, like drugs or if they have complained on social media about working and there previous employer.

    1. I agree with this, it is important to know who you are hiring because that shows how they will treat customers and you don't want to hire someone who is going to make people not want to go back to your business because their experience with a bad co-worker.

    2. I agree with this, because if people wanted to see what you look like and see what you post bad stuff about your old job they can see that.

  6. You might find inappropriate pictures, inappropriate posts or you may also find out something about there history that may not qualify them for the job. Using Facebook in this way might be wrong because they could be lying about anything that they put on there.

    1. That is true, I think people are different on social media. But, I think most people are honest on social media and their online personality mirrors their real personality.

  7. Well one thing that wouldn't make me hire them is if they swear constantly or bad mouthing their parents or friends, but there is wrong in doing that because it is their account, their personal account. You never know if their different in person.

    1. I agree with you. The information they put on there might not actually be true and they could be better in person.

  8. You could find out that they have a poor work ethic from past employers. Using your facebook is a good way to find out about them, and what they are into. You also cant make them accept your friend request. I feel that it is a good way to find out if people are qualified for the job and meet your standards.

    2. You're right, Facebook is a good way to find out if people are qualified for the job and are going to meet your standards.

  9. If you look up an employee on Facebook you might find things that they were trying to hide, not being truthful about, or don't want you to see. You could find inappropriate pictures, post, etc. I think it is totally fine to go to someone's page when you're trying to find out more about them. People should be conscious of what they are posting for this reason.

    1. Once you post something online, it never goes away. You may post something now, but in five years when you try to get a job, it will still be there.

  11. I think looking on Facebook is a good idea but, you can then see who they really are and if they were telling you the truth. People can post bad stuff and then you can look twice about if you wanna hire them or not. What people post on their Facebook is who they are so you will be able to see if they would be a good person to hire or not.

    1. That's very true. Though people do lie on Facebook, etc., seeing what that person sees as "OK" can really show more about your candidate.

  12. I don't think there is a problem with looking on Facebook after receiving an application from someone, because people lie on applications all the time, and Facebook may show you the unmonitored person.

  13. I don't think there is anything wrong with using Facebook to find out a little more about who your hiring. It allows you to be cautious of who your hiring but Facebook might not be the best site to find info on people

    ReplyDelete

    1. Exactly! You never know if the person your hiring could be lying just so they would get the job.

      Delete
    2. well that is true that someone could be lying when they say something good about themselves, or have someone else say something good about them, but people usually don't suspect their employer is gonna look through their profile and find something.

      Delete
    3. Yea, I agree face may not be the best site because, not everyone uses it.

    4. Yes, I agree with cody

  14. I think Facebook is very good resource for store managers. They give you a look into a person's personal lives. If they're out partying every weekend, posting rude things and posting about drugs and alcohol, they're probably not going to make good employees. A person could have bad mouthed their last job or employer. Facebook is a good resource for finding essential information.

  17. If I saw something that had bad language or was not appropriate then that could make me not want to hire someone for a job. If you do like a background check on someone you are looking to hire I think it is okay to use Facebook in that way because then you would be able to see what kind of person they really are and what they are like with after hours.

    2. I agree i wouldn't want someone thats disrespectful and immature working for me

  18. If I were to find inappropriate language, images, or symbols, that candidate to me would be unfit for the job, especially if they post about underage drinking, etc. or getting arrested. I feel this is OK to do as it shows how mature and responsible the candidate is actually, and looking on Facebook can show who you are actually hiring.

    1. I agree, it is totally ok for someone to look up your name to see what you post and more about you that you may have left out of you application. You want to know who you are hiring and if they fit the job for a teen to work for the summer.

  19. I believe there is nothing wrong with using Facebook to find out more information about a potential co-workers, and how their outside life is going. It's important to know what your workers are doing and how to act on social media. If someone you hired is using inappropriate language, posting inappropriate pictures, and posting other inappropriate things, you would want to know because that person is representing and working for your business. I would not hire someone if I saw they were not good people, by that I mean if they posted pictures of drinking, of them swearing on posts and other people posts, and if they are bullying and not being respectful.

  20. I think using Facebook to hire someone is a good thing, it's so you can tell what kind of people they are hanging around with, of if they ever did anything bad or even if they post bad things, just so you can see what kind of people you are working with. or wanting to hire.

  24. If I was looking to hire someone and i was looking on their Facebook, I would look for mental issues, alcohol, and if they spell things correctly. I believe it is ok to use Facebook this way because it can help with the judgement of whether or not to hire someone or fire someone.
