The Internet of Things

The "Internet of Things" (IoT)

- The screen on you refrigerator tells you that your blood sugar is running low, so you grab some fruit.

- While flying to your vacation destination, you realize that you forgot to turn the thermostat down at home, so you do it from your smart phone.

- Your car is about due for an oil change (using that fancy synthetic oil you like), and your mechanic is ready for you, because he monitors your engine, as well as his supply of synthetics.

This might sound like the future, or maybe you've heard of one of these things already happening - both are true. They're examples of what things might be like with the "Internet of Things".

In the IoT, EVERYTHING is connected via the internet (cloud): cars, appliances, planes, security, hospitals, animals and.....yes, you. The idea is that everything will communicate, and, in the end, this communication will help us to lead better lives.

"The Internet of Things is the next generation of personal computing, whereby objects interact, potentially independently, with each other and with their environment,”

"The Internet of Things is the combination of sensors, actuators, distributed computing power..."

"Tiny detectors that can gather and relay data about location, activity, and health...", "The IoT makes it possible to monitor and control the location, condition, and behavior of objects, machinery and devices through networks."

Here are some resources to look at that will help you understand the IoT. Take a look at them, and talk about what you think about the idea. Pros and cons.

We Need To Get The IoT Right

A Hacker's-eye View of the Internet of Things

  1. I think the Internet of Things could make life a lot easier by being able to control everything virtually from your computer. However, it could be dangerous. Hackers could get into your computer or phone and get into your house, and hack everything. I think it's a good idea, but people would just have to be safe.

    1. I think there would have to be regulations on certain things within the IoT. That would help lower the hacking events and ultimately protect everyone.

    2. I agree you would have to be very safe because they could hack basically anything.

    3. I agree! Alot of scary people!!!

    4. I agree. I dont think they should make any of this happen.

    5. I agree, I think regulations would hep lower the hacking, but people would still have to be safe.

  2. I think that for the most part IoT could be very helpful, but it can also be a very, very big problem as it can be easily hacked. I think that the detectors that monitor your location activity and health with will be hacked maliciously, and may cause harm to consumers. The pros are obvious, but the cons may out weigh the pros, but so far, I'm not sure.

    1. I agree, I think the cons may outweigh the pros especially when it comes to your location and other personal knowledge such as health and even your thoughts.

    2. Yea, I agree, while it can help it easily could get hacked (SkyNet) and will inevitably break down society.

  3. I think the idea of everything being connected to the internet is a good idea. That goes only so far though because of all the cons. There is also many pros. Everything is connected to the internet now including transportation, healthcare, retail, and the list goes on and on. It helps make everything easier, everything faster than it was before. But there is also some cons, like hacking. Most people don't even know if they have been hacked, and I think hacking is a serious problem. Most people have very important information on their devices, credit cards, insurance, etc., and if these things get hacked it can ruin someone's life. So in all, I think the internet is a awesome thing, but there is some bad things that can happen that you should be prepared for when you start using the internet.

    1. Yes being hacked with that much info insecure is a big problem.

    2. I agree so many people have important information on their devices and if somebody hacks that could be really bad and they could lose so much money.

  4. I feel the Internet of Things is a good idea on paper. You can have everything controlled through your computer/phone making life easier and more efficient. However, bugs in the system or hacking could totally ruin this idea, and the fact that everything would run on this would make everything corrupt in the process of something bad happening. Sounds cool enough but I don't think it is meant to be.

    1. Yes, I agree with your whole paragraph, because if your security system doesn't work good, then your devices like your laptop and maybe your important accounts like credit cards can be hacked.

    2. I agree with you there could be hacks or bugs and destroy the whole thing and wasted money.

  5. The IoT can and would be very helpful and an easier way to live but it can be very dangerous in different ways. It could be helpful with life because you'd be able to control everything from your cell phone (if you have one) or from your computer too. A big con about it though is that if it gets hacked, then everything it controlled the hacker would be able to control. It's a good idea but it has its flaws.

  7. I feel like the Internet of Things is a great and useful thing, but it may come with problems. Problems like hacking would be a huge downfall. What would happen if someone could hack your house thermostat and use a lot of power, and make your house warm or cool? Or, what would happen if a hacker could attack your car and have your car break down? As with all things, the IoT would have many benefits and many downfalls.

    1. I agree, so much progress could be made, but with such a cost with hackers and software issues.

    2. Agreed, we need to be careful with this technology, it could cause so many issues.

    3. I agree, along with the multiple benefits there are also downfalls as well.

  8. I think the Internet of things is a very useful thing, but you also have to be aware of all the dangers that come with it. People could easily hack into your cellphone, home devices, or pretty much anything. It sounds like a very cool idea because it can be very convenient but I don't think it would be worth the risk.

    1. I agree, I feel that the risk would make you not want to use it.

    2. There is also alot of dangers. It is a great way to control things when you're away.

    3. I agree, anyone who hacked could basically do anything they wanted to your house under the internet circumstances

      Delete
    4. I agree with what you said.

  9. Yes the internet of things could be extremely dangerous, but putting that factor to the side, the internet of things could be extremely useful in so many situation. For example you could have a smart stove that hooks up to your phone, but your away from your house you left the your stove on, dont worry because your phone is connected to it so you can turn it off. There ya go The internet of things can be supper useful.

  10. This is a very useful advancement. The Internet of things is very useful, and it will help people stay connected. This can also come with some issues. If the software isnt working then you're out of luck. Hackers can also get into your personal information and possibly your house.

  11. The Internet of Things, could be very useful but at the same time dangerous. With the ability to have basically EVERYTHING connected to the internet it would give you the ability to do many things you couldn't previously. But every thing connected to the internet has a chance of being hacked.

  12. I think something like that would be amazing but everyone needs to remember that any technology like that is easy to hack and that could cause alot of problems, You could burn someones house down if you had power of alot of the things in there home.

    2. Yeah i agree with that, getting hacked would be really bad.

    3. Yea, I agree, while it would be awesome SkyNet will still inevitably come to power and kill us all.

  14. This would be great to have but I think it would be easy to hack.

  16. I think it would be a good idea to have computers control the world because it would make life easier, quicker, simpler. You just have to remember there are bad people out there that could hack your computer system and then destroy everything which would be really bad. It will be a really good thing as long as people keep it safe and don't hack things.

    1. That is true. The fact that it could have great rewards even with the risks involved could be amazing.

    2. I agree, with how it would be very good to have rely on technology but what if all this technology crashes and we have no backup plans just incase the power goes out all over the world, we have to be prepared with that also.

    3. computers controlling the world would be cool and in law control might make the loss of lives lower

  17. I agree that connecting all of are devices would be great, but if one device falls they all fall. It would be great to have all your devices everywhere connected so then you wouldn't have to carry all of your devices everywhere. Connecting all of are devices will also lead to Sky Net which will inevitably kill us all.

  18. I think that the loT is a huge advancement in technology and can take stress off of peoples' shoulders, but I can see it becoming a huge disaster. Dangerous people have access to technology that could hack into these advancements and break the law.

  22. I think the Internet of Things could make life a lot easier Because you can control everything instead of getting up. But there could be hackers to hack your house and stuff.

  23. It could be a good idea but with how things are now a days, it seems easy for hackers to hack things. Computers controlling the world is a little crazy, I personally wouldn't want a computer doing everything for me.

    1. I agree with you. It is a little crazy having computers control everything

  24. I think it's a good idea to be able to control everything but if everyone uses it then they could become lazier. For example: The movie WALL-E has humans that become fat and lazy because of the electronics they were using. Even though it was an animated movie it still could happen to us in real life.

  27. I think it's a good idea that we have robots to work our jobs but it bad at the same time because in the future, I feel like no human is going to be able to get a real job. The robots can be very helpful but I personally feel like the industries who use them are going to fire al of the humans that are working for them and switch to robots to do the work.

  28. It would be an interesting possibility, to say the least. It would make America even more lazier then it already is but it can do some good for the world. However Hackers are always there to ruin the fun, and the possibility of things going wrong in the 'technology' is big! But it is an interesting Idea.
