Humans Need Not Apply

Humans Need Not Apply

After watching the attached video, think about the effects of technology on our society, and specifically about how it affects the jobs that will be available in the future.

This isn't just about robots replacing people. This is also about the fact that, when that happens, it will eliminate the "smaller" or "fall back" jobs that are available to people.

It will also create more jobs, because people will be needed to program or write the code for the systems that will do the more menial jobs, the service jobs - the lifting.

What effect will this have on your schooling and/or your career path? If you've been putting thought into what you're going to DO with your life - how does this change that idea?

Geeky question: How is this society and economy of the future demonstrated in Star Trek?

Humans Need Not Apply

This is some commentary by a guy who supports the ideas behind "Humans Need Not Apply". It's just for some additional info...

In Response to Humans Need Not Apply - "The whole idea of having to work for money, in order to live, will have to be thrown out of the window."

  1. By replacing human jobs with robots, smaller jobs will eventually be eliminated. However, it will create more jobs in fields such as engineering and automation technicians. As you can see these are higher end jobs which require more school or training. In ways this is a good thing. It will force people to go to further their education and in the long run they will make more money. It could also be a bad thing because it would be taking jobs away from teenagers still in high school who can only get jobs that don't require a college degree. All in all, with both its pros and cons, I think this is a good thing.

    1. Replacing robots with human jobs would be great because then people will have to further their careers like you said.

    2. Exactly, I think it is a good thing.

    3. It would be likely, that only people with higher-education degrees would have jobs within the workforce. This would be something that the world's workforce has almost never seen.

    4. I agree with what you said

    5. Yes, but Eventually robots will replace those jobs until there aren't any jobs left, causing the economy to collapse and we will have to wipe out all the robots.

  2. I think by replacing humans everyday jobs with robots it could potentially be very helpful because the job would get done faster and more precise. On the down side for some people they may be losing their only income. For example all the jobs in a warehouse might be taken over by a robot and all those people who initially worked their would be losing their job. So I think robots replacing jobs are both a good thing, but also a bad thing.

    1. I agree, there is a lot of help and harm that can be done with robots taking over many of our jobs.

    3. I agree with you, robots would be helpful and efficient. Yes, there would be a loss of some jobs, but they would also create jobs too.

    4. Jobs being created would be a very good thing.

    5. There would have to be serious consideration with the expense of the robots in comparison with the expense of employing a person or multiple people.

    6. I agree with what you said

    7. I agree how it wouldn't be all a good idea because some people rely on that job to provide for their family, and losing that job it would be harder to find a better job, say if they didn't go to college because they couldn't afford it.

  3. I agree that advancing in the way of robotics and technology is a good thing, but the world is over populating and advancing in ex. protective robots will protect humans more than we are now and maybe in a few hundred years we'll end up like wall e / krypton.

    1. I agree, they would be extremely productive for humans, but they still come at the cost of hackers breaking into them and making them do malicious things.

  4. Replacing humans for jobs with robots would cause unemployment, but, the job would more than likely be done better. This could be helpful, and harmful to humans. Robots would probably take over practice jobs and warehouses, which would be harmful, but they would get the job done better than humans would, which would be extremely helpful.

  5. I think we could use robots to advance technology but i also think we need a purge to try not to over populate the earth in a few more years, not robots protecting us

    ReplyDelete

    1. Disagree, I think we don't need a purge and robots could advance technology but people could also hack the robot systems.

      Delete
    2. A purge? Why a purge, yes I understand with the over population but other then that what would be the point of it? Why not go all out and make the Hunger Games if you want a purge.

      Delete
    3. Why a hunger Games you lose more people in a purge

      Delete
    4. why would you want a purge, sure it would get rid of the population, but what if we lose someone important?

  6. Technology has evolved so much in the past century that it is simply amazing. Technology has many many benefits with a few downfalls, but we, as humans, are able to manage the downfalls by strict regulation and laws. After watching the video, technology seems like it can do anything, but we know that certain jobs or tasks will always be done more efficiently by humans. Think of a mechanic, although robots can fix cars, one robot will most likely do one job, that leaves companies needing to buy hundreds of different robots to fix different things. Even if there was a robot that could do many different things, someone would probably have to monitor or control it, right? So why not just have the human do the job, and not have to worry about small things that will not cooperate with the robot. Jobs done by expensive technologies will implement a lasting change on the workforce, maybe for the better, maybe for the worse.

    1. I agree that it could be for the better or for the worse, machines are unpredictable and can be costly.

    2. Agreed, that kind of advanced technology is very expensive, humans are cheaper to pay and don't work on one problem, but on many.

  7. I feel like people stop talking to the waiters/ waitress. This is also a more productive, and less money. This is also bad because it can have malfunctions.

  8. I think by replacing humans with robots will be bad for the country or world reason being people could end up hacking the robot system and then them turning on us or something. Also families wouldn't have that income every week or two weeks for the job that the robots have taken over. I personally think robot shouldn't take over the work force or even some of it because there would be more people in the country without a job.

  10. My mind could go either way, I mean there is good and bad to this. In my mind the bad weighs out the good. One good reason for robots to take over the work force would have to be safety. If we can make robots or advanced technology to the point were we can pin point the location of a person and come up with multiple ways of saving them without them dying, then I would be happy with the way technology is advancing. Now some of the bad, If someone was to hack the robots, then they could do anything they wanted. Another bad reason is, think about the lower income families, thy depend on these lower end jobs to survive the week, even month. To take away their job and replace them with robots would be horrible, if your think the unemployment rate is high right now, think about what would happen if we replace humans with robots.

(Side Note: If we replace humans with robots we could end up like the people from Wall-e, Lazy and uncaring for our environment)

    1. I agree, the unemployment rate could be much higher

    2. The low income families do depend on the jobs that they have and being replaced by machines will only cause more harm to them.

      Delete
    3. I totally agree with you. People would probably start hacking into the computer systems and our robots could turn on us. Humans will become lazy sooner or later with this kind of technology too.

  11. Replacing humans for jobs with robots would cause unemployment, but, the job would more than likely be done better.

    1. I agree that it would cause unemployment, but also that the job would get done faster and better, and less likely to have something wrong with say your order from McDonald's, because robots are more precise.

      Delete
    2. I agree it would cause unemployment and people need to have a jobs to pay there bills

      Delete
    3. i agree. They should cut back on the robots.

  12. I think replacing robots for humans is good and bad, as it can have a lot of pros and cons. Having robots take over and replace a lot of jobs eliminates jobs for someone who hasn't gone to college or has got their diploma, so it would cause a major struggle for those people who need small jobs just to get by. But, it can a good idea because it would make people work harder to succeed, plus they would need more smart people to make these robots to work these jobs.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It would inspire people to work harder no doubt. Hopefully they can keep that job they worked for for so long though.

      Delete
    2. Think about the lower income families they rely on their job week to week and imagine if a robot just took it away from them.

      Delete
  13. This is what you could call good on paper, but not in reality. Yes, jobs would be done better, quicker, and cheaper, but eventually this would lead to everyone out of a job, even the highest end jobs. Blue collar work would be nonexistent and white collar work would only be available to the bosses and managers of the work force. There is the possibility of new and different jobs for humans, but it most likely won't be enough to employ everyone.

    1. Yeah everyone's jobs would be taken over by robots the people need something to do and what about the hackers that im sure would want to hack into the systems it could become very expensive.

      Delete
    2. sure this could happen but, there are still some jobs that robots cannot do efficiently, like teaching.

      Delete
    3. I agree, and robots would be able to take over basically any job we have.

      Delete
    4. Yea they will probably just take over humanity and we will either end up like Skynet or Wall-e

      Delete
  14. I think if robots took our jobs it wouldn't be a good thing because then the unemployment rate would go up. There would be less jobs for people. If the computer systems get hacked then we would be screwed if the robots were going to do like everything. A lot of people rely on their jobs and if robots were to just take over them it wouldn't be good. Plus if you didn't have to control that you are driving would just be weird I don't think its safe.

    1. Yes, there are many cons to having robots take over, but hopefully if or when it's done, robots will be limited for the simple fact of keeping jobs available.

      Delete
    2. i Agree. They should slow down with the robots unless there for military usage.

      Delete
  15. it is a good idea and would work good. But the bad thing about it is it would cause unemployment rate to go up.

  16. Technology is far more advanced than we are, and it will keep advancing. Right now robots and technology can already do so much and have already replaced so many jobs. In the future the amount of machines doing our jobs will keep increasing. This can be both a good and bad thing with it forcing people to get higher education and having to work in different fields, but by also taking jobs from people already in the workforce.

    1. I agree with this but its a very bad idea in my opinion

    2. Agreed, the unemployment rate will escalate and many problems will occur in the economy. Many people will have to learn difficult jobs and add years to get their college degree.

  17. If robots take over every job, we will still have to do things, some things robots can not do, like being an efficient teacher, so we will have jobs just maybe not as many as we have at the moment.

    1. But there are very few jobs that robots couldn't take over and what would be the point of teaching when the kids won't ever get jobs.

  18. Robots have already taken over many of our jobs in industry, and from here could start taking over thousands of our jobs and make unemployment rates go way up. Robots should only be used for dangerous jobs and jobs humans don't want to do.

    ReplyDelete
  19. This will probably make the jobs very and a lot of people with not have money if the robot people are taking jobs yes this will create more jobs but what if people don't want to do that people should have a choice and we should just keep it to actual humans running and doing the working

  21. I think it's a good idea that robots are doing some of the hard work that we once had to do but lately I think they are beginning to take over jobs that people can do. It's a good idea for businesses to have robots because that means more money for them but it isn't good for the worker because they would have to find a new job. Inside jobs that are capable by humans shouldn't have robots doing them but like heavy duty jobs are okay for robots to do.

  22. I don't think replacing humans with robots is a very good idea. Humans will become lazy and dependent on robots. They already created a vacuum that vacuums your house while you're at work and can maneuver without human help. Humans will lose jobs worldwide; new electronic jobs will be created, but what if you're not interested or good in that field?

    1. i agree robots already do so much and humans can't afford to loose jobs.

  23. I think having robots and other new technology could make people become more lazy. People will lose their jobs and robots will take their place.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Replacing humans with robots is ultimately inevitable, and i feel that you have to options, accept it or go off the grid. I believe at first replacing humans with robots will be bad for the job economy, but as soon as they almost completely replace us it would be a nearly care free life, because there probably wouldn't be any jobs so no way of getting money, no money means no work, so all we'll be doing is nothing.

  25. I think having robots and other new technology could make more people lazy and people will lose their jobs to the robots.

  26. i think having robots do all of our jobs isn't a good idea, we already lack jobs in our economy and having robots do them would not be good for our economy.
