The Data Brokers
After watching these 60 minutes videos, discuss how you feel about the business of selling private information:
1. Should it be legal? People willingly put there information into questionnaires and online surveys, so marketers or "data brokers" are just using information that people have put out on the internet.
2. What, if anything, should be done about the practice?
3. If you've filled out a survey or shared personal information with a company, did you have any idea that they'd be able to sell your information?
4. From the second video, what do you think about the steps the woman takes to protect her privacy?

I think that it should be illegal to collect and store all of that private information about someone, especially if they don't even know its happening. I had no idea until now that when you do something as little as a survey that they could sell your information. I think the women from the video takes it a little too far, but I guess if she wants to have a private life on the internet then I guess thats how far you have to go.

DeleteCertain websites, like google, keep your information and do not sell it. I do not have a problem with that, because I know that these companies are not potentially trying to ruin my life.
DeleteI don't think it should be legal, you should be able to keep what ever information you want to yourself. If there could be something done about the things taking our information it would be good, Yeah i had no clue they could sell my stuff, that should be illegal. She must really want to keep her stuff to herself, which makes sense because I think being safe is best online.

People should have the right to decide whether or not their information can be collected or not. I never knew that so many companies were tracking my every mood and it's kind of unsettling. I think the lady in the second video is a little psycho, but I can see where she's coming from. She's taken things a little too far with the privacy.

DeleteI do not think that keeping and sharing your information should be legal. I think that people should be given the opportunity to choose whether they want their information taken or not. I never knew that companies would be able to sell information from surveys or other things you take online. I think that women is crazy because I don't think anyone really cares about specific peoples information.

DeleteThe Data Broking industry is full of organizations that are working to collect your private information. That may sound bad, and illegal, but you are putting your information out there. Nobody said you have to be on the internet or have an IPhone. Some of the companies work to make your life more convenient by giving you access to coupons and ads for products that you are personally interested in. I would think it would be common sense that if you answer surveys that your information would be stored and not just thrown out. The lady in the second video changed her whole life to attempt to be 'undercover'. What does she have to hide everyday?
ReplyDeleteI agree to a point. Yes you're putting some information out there, and you should know it can be saved. At the same time it's not common sense to know that by downloading an app, like angry birds, it allows people to track you.
DeleteI agree that you are putting your information out there, but you should have to give consent to those companies to have them use your information, they shouldn't be allowed to use it without permission.

I think it should be easier for a person to get out of the system. I didn't know that by filling out simple surveys companies could sell my information. I think the steps the lady too were extreme and unrealistic. People should not have to go that far to protect their privacy.

DeleteHonestly you wont be able to control the flow of information even if you make it illegal, and the only possible way to keep yourself hidden is to completely go off the grid. So what if people sell your information, cool someone is interested in you, and what way you take that is your own problem. And people say that you didn't have a choice on giving away your information, well that true, but you did make the choice to go on the internet.

DeleteIt may sound bad, but you are the one giving out your personal information (this doesn't include apps that track your location.) You don't need to use the websites that give out your personal data. Most of the tracking is done to get more ad traffic by tracking what you do and don't search and seeing what you're interested in, to me, that doesn't necessarily sound creepy, more like a clever business move. And the lady in the 2nd video is straight up crazy, I feel that she has something she desperately has to hide.

I had absolutely no idea that people could just take your information that easily kinda scary if you think about it. The women in the second video has overdone it I feel but, she just wants to protect her kids and herself which isn't a bad idea. Maybe if it works more people will start doing it.

DeleteI think it shouldn't be legal because they are invading your personal information when they collect and store the information they have about you. It's not right to be able to keep files with the stuff you like and what you don't like or prefer. I don't think it's right that a company can collect information about you and then be able to sell it to either another company or another person, it's like they're selling yourself to another company. I had no idea that they would sell their information that they have about you, otherwise I wouldn't have taken a survey. I think it's good the way she protects herself but I think it could be a struggle because you would always have to keep your guard up and be careful on what you clicked or what you look at.

I get the idea of trying to provide customers with what they want, etc, but these companies are taking more personal information than they need without any consent. At the very least there should be an option on what or even if you want your information to be included in these programs.
