Safety In Our Schools
Read the following article, about a New Jersey school district that has armed police officers stationed at their schools:

What do you think about this? Do you think it's an effective way to protect our schools? Why, or why not? What might be some other steps schools can take?

I think putting police in schools might be a good idea because I think school shootings should not happen so cops would I think would really help prevent school shootings
ReplyDeleteYea I agree with your statement, but say that there is a fire going on at that cops house and he doesn't know about it and all the things he cherished are now charred and now he is feeling regret for going to the school that day and starts to get angry at the children and the school shooting now occurs from the person who was suppose to protect the school.

DeleteI think putting authorities like that in school might help keeps kids in line and it is safe, but those things don't happen on and everyday basis,and i feel like they would be doing nothing for a lot of the time, but it would be very costly and it would just cost more for school to keep the athorities there.
ReplyDeleteBut you never know, we never thought that Saxon Harbor was going to flood either, but it did. This is kind of like that, we never know what's going to happen. We can't predict the next school shooting.
Deleteyeah i agree, but still i don't think this is something they would be able to make big investment in, i mean maybe in the areas where there has been a lot more deadly things happen, but in a place like where we live something like that wouldn't happy very much.

DeleteI think Police being at the schools for protection is very helpful, school shootings happen more and more often lately and it's time some protection is issued. They made a point in there article about how the Police officer is significantly outnumbered, but I believe the school has a much higher chance of protecting their children if they have someone there with a firearm to protect them.
ReplyDeleteYes that last statement you made is absolutely true. ANY type of protection for kids in school is good, even if its only one officer. That one officer could make a huge difference in the outcome of a shooting or a potential shooting.
DeleteI think bringing armed officers into the schools is a good idea to keep everyone safe, but like it said in the article what is one man going to do against a shooter with 60 rounds? It might make everyone feel safe, but in reality that one guard isn’t going to be able to do much. I agree with the article that they should try to get tougher gun laws out there. If its harder for these people to get guns, it might help prevent these shootings.

DeleteI agree, I also feel as if the shooter has more fire power it wont really matter. I believe that it is useful though because people may not come into a school armed because of the fact that someone is armed.
DeleteYes, I believe that armed guards are good investment, they protect the students and staff from deadly situations, but I don't think we need them everywhere. Our school has a nice system and keeps us safe, we wouldn't necessarily need an armed guard. But I could be wrong, there could be a murderer in Hurley at this very moment and we wouldn't know it. You can't control some situations and this is one of them. It's too easy for psychopaths to get their hands on a weapon and do what they please with it. Schools can't predict when something bad is going to happen. All we can do is try to prepare for it.

DeleteI think having armed resource officers in our schools would be a great idea. The first opinion article is so one-sided it is unbelievable. Do they realize that it only takes one bullet to take someone out? It doesn't matter if the officer only has fifteen bullets, it will only take one of them to take out a shooter.
ReplyDeleteBesides protecting the student from intruders, the resource officer would likely be able to work with a variety of different problems. They could help in counseling kids who are thinking of taking their own life. They would also be able to emergency medical help during a medical emergency. Both of these would be a huge asset, along with the general protection factor.
If there had been an armed officer in the Oregon college, I think that they could have prevented some of the deaths. Do I think that an officer could have stopped all nine deaths? No, but maybe that number could have only been two or three deaths.
I agree, having armed police in the school with a weapon will help prevent a shooter very effectively. The first opinion article was very one sided and needs to get out of its delusional mindset.

DeleteI think that Police at schools could dramatically help. It would help, prevent mass amounts of kids dying, along with scaring many people thinking about causing a school shooting. If you had armored guards/police officers at school, many school shooters would rethink going to the school, or would be shot before they had a chance. Towards the end it says how we should enforce stricter gun laws, that's not the case. Because bad people will still do bad things and will manage to get guns.

ReplyDeleteI agree, it would also help with other issues inside schools including drugs, and unwanted items that are brought to school. Bringing cops into the school would make everyone in the school much much safer.

ReplyDeleteI agree that we should have cops in the school, but disagree about having teachers armed because teachers went to college to teach, not to know how to use a gun properly, and I would think you would have to have a gun check and much more stuff to be certified to have gun in a school.
DeleteI think every school should have cops patrolling inside and outside of the school grounds for protection, it can make everyone in the school so much safer. It would prevent school shootings, drugs being entered in the school, and better behavior of the students and kids. It could help with so much other things as well, not just drugs and gun shootings.

DeleteI think we should have at least something in our schools, security guard, police, or a trained professional, armed or not. We just need something to deter people from going and shooting people, because if they see a guard or police there more likely to be scared and not shoot up a school.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this, but say one day a cop is comes home from work and learns that his wife and his little girl named Susie who was just seven years old was just murdered, now those kids he protects start to make fun of him. Then next Thing you know a school shooting happens, but on the inside.
DeleteI believe that we could have cops in our schools, but maybe not teachers with arms. In my opinion, the teachers could be the school shooters and the school just gave them their weapon. Cops in our schools, can help because then if the shooter does come they end up being trapped now.

DeleteI think that having security officers, police, etc. could help with the possible threat of shootings. Having trained people in our school can help with how people also feel about their own safety also. I think it is a great idea that all schools have more safety in their schools.

ReplyDeleteIf you think about it, a school has no protection. A shopping mall may have 500-600 people in it, and there are guards, but a school with 500-600 people has nothing.
DeleteI think it's a good idea to have police officers outside of a school because then if something happens they are there already and people who plan on doing something bad to the school and children will think twice about it because they would have a shorter time to get out of there and run off or leave. It might freak the students out a little bit because if you think about it, going to school every morning and seeing police officers outside the door is kind of spooky but it would be for protection. A few other project steps a school could/can take are getting advanced security cameras placed everywhere throughout the school inside and out, then have someone always monitoring them and being aware. I think all of this with the police officers ect. is a good idea because then at least the school would have more protection against shooters and harmful people.

DeleteIt may freak the kids out but if the teachers explain why in a way that they would understand that it is for their protection, and if the parents know about everything they wouldn't be as freaked out.

DeleteIt would be good and bad to have someone walking around the school inside and out with a gun a lot of people might not feel safe. Parents might not want that for their kids either. I think we should have a perosn doing that, then I also thing we shouldn't.
